World’s Greatest national TV program features Webb City firm

Crown Point Productions, the producers of the television show “World’s Greatest!…”, announced that they have recently selected Cardinal Scale Manufacturing of Webb City, MO to be a part of the popular television series as the “World’s Greatest” scale company. The show airs at 10:30 Central Time Saturday morning, September 13th through the ION TV network.

As part of the show, Crown Point Productions will be sending a film crew to the company’s manufacturing facilities in Webb City, Missouri in order to get the story behind the story on this great company, and to show the “World’s Greatest!…” viewers why Cardinal Scale Manufacturing Company was selected as the best in their category, and therefore featured on the show. “World’s Greatest!…” is a thirty minute show dedicated to highlighting the world’s greatest companies, products, places, and people. Joplin Globe profiles summer youth efforts

The Joplin Globe newspaper profiled the summer youth employment initiatives in their June 23rd edition. The article features supervisors and youth on the job at state park sites in Liberal, Cassville, and Lamar as part of the State Parks Youth Corps. In addition to the newspaper article online, the Globe produced a video version online.

The State Parks Youth Corps project is funded through the U.S. Department of Labor and administered through the Missouri Division of Workforce Development as well as the Southwest Missouri WIB.

WIB Assists KOAM-TV with news feature on impact of census on local economy

Insights provided by the Southwest Missouri WIB assisted KOAM-TV’s Jordan Aubey with a news feature on the potential impact of the 2010 on Joplin’s economy. As the lead story on its 10 p.m. newscast Tuesday evening, the feature examined the impact for the City of Joplin to break the 50,000 population mark.

KOAM interviewed Joplin mayor Gary Shaw and Chamber President Rob O’Brian on what businesses are looking for in terms of city size and the Joplin region’s current threshold that factors surrounding communities and daily traffic. Jasen Jones at the WIB provided comments on additional grants available to communities that surpass population milestones and face new challenges related to growth.

Gov. Nixon visits Carthage for official launch of vets hiring initiative

“Missouri hires its veterans.”

That was the clear message Gov. Jay Nixon delivered today during a stop in Carthage, as he kicked off Show-Me Heroes, a new initiative to connect military veterans with job opportunities when they return home from service.

Show-Me Heroes, an outreach of the Missouri Career Center system, is a campaign to showcase Missouri businesses that are willing – and eager – to hire veterans. Specifically, the program asks employers to sign a pledge to ramp up efforts to reach out to, recruit and interview veterans for job openings at their businesses.

“Missouri’s military veterans have served honorably and bravely to fight terror and secure our freedom around the world,” Gov. Nixon said. “Veterans also possess unique skills and advanced training that make them ideal candidates for many jobs. Show-Me Heroes is one clear way we can acknowledge the sacrifices made by the men and women of our Armed Services to keep our families safe and secure, and help our veterans transition to civilian life once they return home. I thank the businesses from across Missouri that have taken the Show-Me Heroes pledge, and I encourage every Missouri business to make this commitment today.”

Gov. Nixon visited Schreiber Foods in Carthage this morning before heading to a similar stop in Springfield. During his visit, Gov. Nixon spoke about the importance of the program and thanked the businesses for becoming involved. Lt. Col. Alan Rohlfing, the director of Show-Me Heroes, also detailed how other businesses can take the pledge.

“Taking the Show-Me Heroes pledge couldn’t be easier,” Lt. Col. Rohlfing said. “Employers can visit the state Web site – www.MO.gov – and take the pledge today. I urge employers across Missouri to log on and become a part of this campaign now.”

Once a company has taken the Show-Me Heroes pledge, the business is listed prominently in an online database, highlighting veteran-friendly employers across Missouri. The database includes contact information for the businesses and links to their Web sites. Employers also receive a special certificate, signed by the Governor, and a decal to display at their location.

Beyond the employer directory, the Show-Me Heroes Web site includes additional resources for job-seeking veterans. The site offers links to employment openings within state government, and a link to the Missouri Career Source, a statewide one-stop-shop for Missourians looking for work.

“Missouri’s veterans are trained, dedicated and ready to work,” Gov. Nixon said. “As we continue our efforts to turn this economy around, I am committed to getting our veterans back on the job. I ask every employer in Missouri to visit MO.gov today to take the Show-Me Heroes pledge.”

Show-Me Heroes is just the latest in a series of steps Missouri has taken to become a premiere veteran friendly state, according to the Governor’s office. Last year, Gov. Nixon signed legislation gradually phasing out the state tax on military retirement income. Under that legislation, by 2016, military veterans will not pay a single penny in state taxes on military pensions.

The half-day event took a deeper at economic recovery efforts and impacts across the region, opportunities that may emerge from the economic rebound, and next steps on existing strategy development efforts.

Jeremiah (Jay) Nixon honored the successful efforts of Missouri’s Next Generations Jobs Team that employed and expanded the skills of thousands of youth across Missouri’s fourteen local Workforce Investment Board regions. In special ceremonies held at the Governors Mansion recently, Gov. Nixon recognized Eagle-Picher Industries for their leading edge work in alternative energy.
